ChemCon is a student-led Chemistry event serving Atlantic Canada. We are proud to acknowledge that ChemCon 2024 takes place within Unama'ki, Mi'kma'ki, the unceded historical and present territory of the Mi'kmaq First Nation. Chemistry has historically excluded Indigenous voices, and we hope to be part of the movement to change this and to promote Indigenous practices and knowledge to become integrated within science.
ChemCon is a student-organized conference with a focus on showcasing student achievement and demonstrating opportunities for aspiring chemists. The conference comprises of several events such as keynote speakers, student talks, a research poster fair, workshops, networking events, and group activities.
This year's host for ChemCon is Cape Breton University. This year, CBU (est. 1974) is celebrating its 50th anniversary as an independent degree-granting post-secondary institution. Over the past 50 years, CBU has developed and grown substantially, and is proud of its strong sense of community. CBU offers course options from both the arts and the sciences and offers students many opportunities in academia, research, student politics, and athletics.
This year ChemCon's theme is "Journey Through Chemistry", which is meant to highlight the different paths chemistry students can take throughout their academic careers, and later, their professional lives. Our goal is to showcase the diversity of the discipline and the various opportunities the future may hold for chemistry students.
