WestGrid webinar: Tips & tricks on getting programming help

Wed, Oct 14, 2020 @ 10:00am - 11:00am

Status: Completed

This webinar presents a series of options when you get stuck with your code & introduces key online resources where you can ask for help

You need help with your code? No problem: just ask! … (but make sure you know how to ask).

What do you do when you get stuck? Where can you find relevant information? How to decipher help pages which seem cryptic? And if you need to ask for help, where do you go?

In this beginner-friendly workshop, I will present a series of options useful when you get stuck with your code, then I will introduce key online sites, their functioning, and their culture; finally, I will go over the magic trick to get answers to your programming questions: knowing how to create minimum reproducible examples .

R, Julia, Python, the UNIX shell, and Linux will be used for brief illustrations, but the concepts are universal.

Speaker:

  • Marie-Hélène Burle, Research Computing Training Assistant, WestGrid.
